Hampton City Schools honors 2026 support employees of the year

Hampton City Schools held a recognition ceremony honoring its 2026 support employees of the year, naming one honoree from each school and several central departments.
The host opened the ceremony by thanking school board leaders and the superintendent and saying the district takes pride in the contributions of support staff. “These individuals are our unsung heroes,” the host said, noting that nearly one-third of the division’s employees serve in nonexempt support roles that keep classrooms, meals and transportation running.
Each school and department selected one honoree to represent its site. The host invited Dr. Mason and Dr. Haines to join on stage to present awards and asked honorees to follow event staff, accept recognition onstage and then sit in a reserved section before reassembling for a group photo. A board member acknowledged the presence of Delegate Virgil Thornton of the Virginia General Assembly and invited him to join the stage as a supporter of the district.
The ceremony’s program included the reading of the full list of honorees and their roles. Among those recognized were Tanisha Tyler, administrative secretary at Aberdeen Elementary School; Derylyn Fenner, restorative counselor at the Adult and Alternative Learning Center and Bridgeport Academy; Resiah Watkins, library technician at Andrews PK–8; Susanna Whiteside, early reading intervention assistant at Armstrong School for the Arts; Jacqueline Foggy, Food and Nutrition Services manager; Cecilia Vendetti, library technician at Hampton High School; and Zakiya Watson, administrative secretary at Phoebus High School. Several honorees who could not attend were still recognized by name.
After the individual recognitions, participants and board members gathered onstage for a group photograph before honorees returned to their seats. The host closed the recognition by asking family members, administrators and colleagues in the audience to stand to be recognized.
The event was ceremonial and informational; there were no votes or formal board actions recorded during this portion of the meeting.
