Cheyenne County approves $16,000 for senior meals and adopts salary reclassification resolution after public hearing

At its May 11 meeting, the Cheyenne County Board of Commissioners voted to provide $16,000 to the East Central Council of Governments to fund senior meals through May and June and adopted Resolution #2026-08 supporting legislation to reclassify the county’s elected-official salary category.

During the public comment period, Monica Wendt said she was concerned that meals might not be provided at the Senior Center and offered to help coordinate deliveries or volunteers. Kathryn Callahan urged the board to question ECCOG about the apparent lack of funds for senior meals. Nancy Bogenhagen later raised broader concerns about state budget cuts and suggested the board consider reclassifying the commissioners as part-time.

Commissioner RJ Jolly moved to approve the ECCOG funding request and Commissioner Rick Pelton seconded; the board approved the $16,000 allocation with a request that ECCOG provide updated financial reports and an explanation of its plan to sustain the meals program. The board then considered the subject of its 9:15 a.m. public hearing and moved to adopt Resolution #2026-08, which expresses support for legislation to amend C.R.S. 30-2-102 to reclassify Cheyenne County as a Category V-C county for the purposes of setting elected officials’ salaries. Commissioner Jolly moved the resolution and Commissioner Pelton seconded; the motion passed.

The board recorded no roll-call tallies in the minutes. As a follow-up, commissioners asked that ECCOG provide financial reports and clarify its financial plan to ensure continued senior meal service. No additional hearings were scheduled in the minutes.
