Parent tells board child threatened with scissors; trustees pledge to follow up

At the May 19 Bassett Unified board meeting, parent Jesse Maruca told trustees his child “was threatened by another child” and recounted the alleged threat in graphic terms: “this other child wanted to stab my child with a pair of scissors on his back.” Maruca said the student who made the threat had been allowed back on campus and that he was not notified before learning the information from the principal.
"My child doesn't want to go to school," Maruca said, urging the board to review why the alleged aggressor had been allowed back and whether the student could be reassigned to another campus or subject to a no‑contact agreement. He asked the board to “find out the details,” saying the situation involved more than one family.
Trustees acknowledged the comment and several said they would follow up. Board Vice President Norma Gonzalez and other members said the superintendent’s office would be asked to reach out to the parent to clarify what steps had been taken and to pursue a resolution.
The board did not take public action at the meeting; the discussion was part of the public‑comment period. The superintendent and district staff later noted they would investigate and address individual safety concerns through the district’s student‑safety and discipline procedures.
The board’s public agenda indicated closed session items related to legal and labor matters later in the evening; no public vote on this incident was recorded in open session.
