Jefferson County Commission recognizes Blue Star Memorial Monument; carries over public hearing and approves consent items

The Jefferson County Commission on May 21 presented a resolution recognizing the Camellia Garden Club of Alabama and the American Legion for the dedication of a Blue Star Memorial Monument at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Commissioner (speaker 5) described the monument as "one of the ... a big deal," and Commissioner Bowen read the resolution, which states that the monument was dedicated on 04/18/2026 at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and honors members of the U.S. armed forces who have served, are serving or will serve. Jimmy Moore, who identified himself as commander of the American Legion district, thanked the commission and called the recognition a highlight of his term.

The commission presented two certificates and several organization members accepted the recognition. American Legion representatives described ongoing veteran-support activities including housing renovations and community service.

On procedural items, the commission carried one public-hearing case over for one additional meeting to allow staff to finish paperwork after staff requested the delay; the carryover was approved by voice vote. The commission also considered a package of 47 resolutions presented earlier; one item (individual staff development, item 89 20 38) was pulled for separate consideration and the remainder were approved on a unanimous voice vote. Two new-business items — including a resolution to transfer medical equipment from the health department to the coroner/medical examiner — were moved and approved as part of new business.

Reverend Willie Hartley from the sheriff’s office led the invocation before the meeting, and commissioners closed with Memorial Day remarks honoring veterans and urging residents to check on isolated veterans. Chair Lonerty closed the meeting for the Memorial Day holiday.
