Committee approves consensus to forward AP Latin 4 and AP Spanish 6 course revisions

The Instructional Committee reviewed proposed revisions to two high‑school world language capstone courses on May 18 and moved both to the full board after committee consensus.
Mr. Snyder (coordinator for fine arts and world language) presented AP Latin 4 as a capstone course focused on translation, literary and historical analysis and preparation for the AP Latin exam and the seal of biliteracy. He named Catherine Nuzzo as the instructor and described coursework that includes translation of Virgil and Pliny and analysis of historical texts.
On AP Spanish 6, Snyder said the course polishes written and spoken fluency, prepares students for AP testing and UConn early college experience (ECE) credit, and uses thematic units where students research and present on global issues such as climate change and transportation. He said the College Board scope and sequence guides the courses but teachers (Jen Wood and Paula Arardi were named) collaborated on local adaptations.
A committee member asked how topics were chosen; Snyder said teacher teams selected authentic, timely topics and that UConn and the College Board review the curriculum for ECE eligibility. The committee accepted both course revisions by consensus and will place them on the full board agenda for formal adoption.
