Inkster announces 10 p.m. juvenile curfew and stepped-up downtown enforcement after resident complaints

The Inkster Police Department announced a citywide curfew for people 17 and younger at the City Council meeting on May 19 and said it will increase enforcement in areas where residents raised safety concerns.
"Anyone 17 and under should be in the home in their houses by 10 p.m., between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. if they're not accompanied by an adult," Chief Jenkins said. "We're gonna have zero tolerance. This curfew is gonna be enforced immediately, and anybody found in violation will be ticketed. And each ticket is a misdemeanor."
Residents voiced concerns about late-night activity downtown. Tyson Ratney urged the council to address persistent gatherings at a gas station on Michigan Avenue, saying people congregate there late into the night and that it can feel unsafe for those returning from work.
"If I go anywhere else, that's the only place that has that large status of people... I'm coming home 2 or 03:00 in the morning from work, and I can't stop at the gas station," Ratney said. Chief Jenkins responded that he would task his midnight crew to increase patrols and enforcement in the area.
Another resident reported ongoing prostitution activity on Michigan Avenue between Middlebelt and Inkster Road. Chief Jenkins said the department can "set up details" and emphasized the department would consider targeted enforcement and increased presence.
Next steps: Chief Jenkins said enforcement will begin immediately, with officers assigned to address the specific locations cited by residents; the department will coordinate details and report back through regular channels.
