Weslaco ISD launches FlexPath virtual pilot to recapture at‑risk freshmen

Weslaco ISD told the board it will pilot a FlexPath virtual learning program in 2026‑27 aimed at recapturing at‑risk freshmen who have disengaged from the district. "There are over 175 students identified at the moment that would be eligible," the program presenter said, and the pilot will initially accept up to 50 students (25 per high school) with plans to grow enrollment if demand and staffing allow.
The program will operate at the district’s College and Career Development Center (CCDC) under program lead Javier Deanda. It is designed as a blended model: most course work will be self‑paced online, while students will attend two days per week in person for test preparation and in‑person tutoring. Students accepted to FlexPath will remain enrolled at their home high school (Weslaco High or Weslaco East) and can transition back to campus instruction if desired.
Trustees asked about athletics eligibility, staffing levels, and how the pilot differs from pandemic‑era remote learning. District staff said students will remain eligible for extracurriculars and that the pilot requires in‑person components to preserve instructional quality. The district will evaluate program interest, staffing needs and student outcomes and adjust cohort size accordingly.
The board did not take a separate vote to approve the pilot during the meeting; staff said further operational details and selection criteria will be developed as the program is implemented.
