Commission recommends approval of 135‑foot monopole after applicant explains minor relocation

The Lewisville Planning and Zoning Commission on May 19 recommended that City Council approve a special‑use permit (Case No. 25‑06‑10‑SUP) for a communication antenna over 25 feet and associated support structure at a retail strip site near 1093 West Main Street.
Staff described a proposed 125‑foot monopole with a 10‑foot lightning rod (total 135 feet), presented a propagation map showing improved coverage, and recommended approval. Staff said the project previously received an SUP in October 2025 and returned because the applicant shifted the tower footprint by more than the 10‑foot threshold that triggers a new SUP review.
The applicant’s representative, Chris Patterson, said subsurface fiber‑optic cables and a water line required moving the site west approximately 30 feet and shifting the tower about 16 feet, which keeps the structure within FAA allowances so the tower remains a dark tower (no obstruction lights). “We found some subsurface telecommunication fiber optic cables that were in the way,” Patterson said, describing the need to relocate the footing and keep the structure within FAA filing requirements.
There were no public objections in the hearing. A motion to recommend approval passed with five votes in favor, one abstention and one absence. Staff said the City Council will hold a second public hearing and make a final decision on Monday, June 15, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.
