Brooklyn City Schools officials said recent upgrades to athletic facilities are transforming school spaces into community assets, drawing outside teams and alumni while supporting expanded student programs.
Coach Jerry Youngerfield described the stadium improvements and rising community interest: “We have a brand new scoreboard with a video board,” he said, and outside schools and organizations have begun using the facilities for practice and home games. He linked better facilities to higher student and community participation, saying upgrades have helped increase numbers in baseball, softball and intramural programs.
Youngerfield also said the district is adding intramural soccer and expanding cross‑country and co‑ed soccer offerings, aiming to broaden participation. He cited pride from residents and returning alumni as evidence the improvements are resonating with the community.
Longtime district staff member Melanie Lowe Fleisher praised the renovated gym’s impact on students. “I've never seen the gym look more amazing,” she said, adding that modified equipment and a more inviting environment help children try new activities, improve fitness and support focus and sleep.
Superintendent Dr. Ted Kularis framed the facilities work as part of a districtwide effort to strengthen programs and opportunities for students and thanked families, staff and the community for their support.
