UT Extension staff brief Coffee County Agricultural Committee on FCS, 4‑H and agriculture programs

UT Extension staff briefed the Coffee County Agricultural Committee on a range of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS), 4‑H and agriculture programs during the February 16 meeting.
Michelle Matthews reported on FCS offerings: Coffee County is one of six counties piloting a 12‑week chair yoga program (two sessions per week); a chair volleyball activity at Manchester Senior Citizens; an “On My Own” program at Raider Academy the week of March 16; and an applied grant for Cardio Drumming equipment. She said three FCE clubs meet monthly (Galentine’s Day had 21 participants) and a Recognition Luncheon is scheduled for March 19. Matthews said FCS staff will continue to assist 4‑H clubs and support the FCS Skillathon when teams are present.
Neil Slone provided 4‑H program details: 43 participants competed in a multi‑grade public speaking contest (4th, 5th, 6th and 8th grades); three senior high members advanced to sub‑regional competition with Sarah Weaver placing fifth at regionals. Livestock programs draw at least 30 participants per session and prepare youth for livestock judging; upcoming events include a Project Fair on March 31 and the Clover Bowl for 4th–8th graders on April 28 at UTSI. Slone said three members — Katie McInturff, Sam Hockett and Ily Allen — are scheduled to attend Congress, and Jr. 4‑H Camp is planned for June 1–5 at the York 4‑H Center in Crossville with 90 spots available (sign‑up April 15 at 7 a.m.).
Amy Prince summarized agriculture programming: a Bonnaroo site visit, Master Gardener intern classes with 18 participants, that 2026 is the private applicator renewal year, and a gardening workshop held Feb. 14 in partnership with Manchester Parks & Recreation (28 participants) with quarterly workshops planned. Other items included a Cattlemen’s meeting on Feb. 17, a Master Beef in‑service, Tree Day (March 20; orders through TDEC), and Farm City Day at the Coffee County Fairgrounds on May 2.
The committee approved routine minutes and adjourned; the minutes record the next meeting as May 11. The minutes were later recorded as approved on May 18, 2026.
