Weber County signals preference for Waste Management to operate transfer station; Washington Terrace watches June deadline

Mayor said Weber County is negotiating contracts and leases with Waste Management, which the county has identified as its preferred operator; the county notified Republic Services of that preference earlier in the day. Tom and council members discussed the operational implications: if Waste Management assumes operations the county would lease the property and step back from running the facility; cities would still be able to contract with haulers to direct their own waste streams but might have to renegotiate service-provider agreements. Staff said Ogden Transfer Station could handle additional loads if the county does not continue direct operations, but that closing the local transfer station would eliminate local services such as weekend trailer drop-off.
Council members were told the county lease with Weaver County expires at the end of June; staff said July 1 is the date by which local arrangements must be clear. Staff characterized the situation as still pending while contracts and leases are finalized and warned that the coming weeks will be busy for city staff and haulers.
