Grant Middle School robotics team honored after design award and Worlds trip

The Marion City Schools board moved a Grant Middle School robotics recognition earlier on the agenda and heard students and coaches describe their state award and experience competing at the VEX World Championships in St. Louis.
"They won a design award, which to me is the best award that you can win at a VEX competition," said Jessica Creamer, a coach for the Grant Middle School robotics team, describing the award criteria that honor documented engineering process, team organization and communication.
Students who traveled said the Worlds event paired them with teams from China and the U.K., providing a cross-cultural competitive experience and alliance strategy opportunities. London Ratliff, who led the team engineering notebook work, explained the documentation role that helped the group qualify for the design award.
Board members praised the students and coaches for representing the district and highlighted how robotics teaches teamwork and problem-solving that translate to real-world jobs. The board invited the team for photos and gave them a round of applause.
Context and local relevance: Grant Middle School took multiple teams to state competition; despite not always having the highest-scoring robots, the judges told coaches that Grants program demonstrated strong student ownership and documentation of the engineering process.
