Oak Creek honored with state and national APWA awards for snow-and-ice operations

The Oak Creek Common Council on May 19 recognized the city's Department of Public Works after the program won Wisconsin chapter and national awards from the American Public Works Association for snow-and-ice operations.
Jennifer Barless, chair of the APWA awards committee, presented the honors and told the council the nominations acknowledge practices that combine continuous improvement, technology and environmental stewardship. "Oak Creek has reduced salt usage, enhanced response times, and evaluated community satisfaction," Barless said.
Assistant Director Tyler Berger accepted the awards on behalf of the city and credited a citywide effort that includes field crews, fleet maintenance, GIS support, engineering, emergency dispatch and the fire department. Berger said the city's proactive anti-icing strategies and staff training factored in the recognition.
Mayor (chair) and several council members praised the DPW staff. The mayor noted some residents mistake county and state roads for city-maintained streets and said the award reflects steady, behind-the-scenes work by many departments.
The awards were announced at the Wisconsin chapter ceremony on April 23 and at the APWA national conference in Cleveland on April 27; the city competed against other chapter winners for the national honor. Council members marked the recognition with brief comments and a formal acknowledgment on the meeting agenda.
