City outlines Jefferson water‑service replacements, reassures residents on concrete and overlay timing

At a May 21 Idaho Falls City Council meeting, Public Works Director Canfield described a planned street maintenance project on Jefferson Avenue that will replace water services located in the roadway and follow with concrete curb and sidewalk repairs ahead of the city’s annual overlay.
“Letters were sent out to property owners,” Canfield said, adding that crews began work from the south and have completed many water‑service replacements in the 900, 1,000 and much of the 1,100 blocks. He said the city intends to pay for the water‑service work and the associated concrete replacements where the utility work requires digging in the public right‑of‑way.
The work will typically involve replacement of one or two curb sections and two to three five‑by‑five sidewalk panels adjacent to each disturbed water service, Canfield said. He told the council the overlay is scheduled for July and August and that the street department will continue to reach out to property owners who have outstanding questions.
Mayor (who led the meeting) and council members thanked staff for the explanation and for preparing a revised owner notification letter to clarify project scope and sequencing. Canfield said the city’s goal is to reduce the number of repeat digs by coordinating utility replacements before pavement overlays.
