Sedgwick County Public Works staff demonstrate fleet and explain chip-seal road maintenance

Sedgwick County Public Works staff demonstrated several pieces of county equipment and described how crews use them for routine maintenance and winter operations. Jen Williams, a Sedgwick County truck driver, said, "We use it to haul aggregate, sand, rock, salt. We also do snow removal."

Staff showed a 2025 t 8 80 Kenworth dump truck that they said is used to haul bulk materials and support winter response. "I'm Jen Williams," she began, then described the vehicle's day-to-day uses.

Phil Peters, the county's lead equipment operator, stood beside a loader and said the machine is used "every day to load any kind of material that we need to load out for the county," including rock and other bulk materials. Peters emphasized the loader's role in moving materials during paving and maintenance operations.

Darren, who identified himself as working for Sedgwick County Public Works, demonstrated an oil distributor and described the chip-seal process: "We spray an oil base on the road. The chipper follows and puts a 3 quarter inch rock over the top of the oil to seal the road, smooth it out, and get longer life out of the road." The staff framed chip-seal as a routine preservation method crews use to extend pavement life.

Justin Moses demonstrated a Bobcat and described its versatility: "You can load trucks with it. We do some final grade with it, do some dirt work with it. You can pretty much use the same to do anything." Moses presented the machine as a multiuse tool for loading, grading and finishing work on local projects.

The demonstration focused on equipment capabilities and routine maintenance practices; staff did not present budget proposals or formal policy recommendations during the session.
