Committee adopts Veterans Affairs oversight report, urges modernization and improved transparency

The Senate Legislative Oversight Committee adopted its subcommittee report on the Department of Veterans Affairs, which outlined 23 findings and recommendations aimed at modernizing governance and improving service delivery to veterans.
Senator Young, presenting the subcommittee findings, said the department (established in 2019) has centralized veterans services and oversees veterans nursing homes with plans for three additional facilities pending federal support. The report recommends stronger transparency and accountability in the use of the military enhancement fund, standardizing operations among county veterans affairs offices, modernizing outdated laws such as those governing the POW Commission and Confederate pensions, and improving data collection, including a statewide system to track veteran suicides.
Secretary McCaffrey and Ed Bell of the department were present for the presentation, the subcommittee reported. Senator Young said the report offers a roadmap to maintain and improve services as the state’s veteran population gradually declines and workforce needs shift.
The subcommittee moved and the full committee adopted the report by voice vote; committee members said the recommendations provide guidance for future legislative and administrative steps to support veterans’ services.
