Geneva County extends Solid Waste Authority participation to 2036 to allow new transfer-station tipping floor

Geneva County Commissioners on March 23 approved a seven-year extension of the county's Participating Subdivision User Contract with the Southeast Alabama Solid Waste Disposal Authority, extending participation through May 14, 2036, and authorizing the chairman to sign related documents.
Solid Waste Director Dawn Smith told the Commission the transfer station's existing equipment is old and often breaks down, requiring drivers to haul waste to neighboring counties. She said a new tipping floor would allow several trucks to dump simultaneously and would save time. Commissioner Jeff Hatcher moved to enter the extension agreement, Commissioner Weston Spivey seconded, and the vote was 4-0.
County leaders also discussed that the county recently sold its landfill; staff said the new owner needs a transition period to set pricing, and the Commission will need to reassess bulk pickup fees. The extension was presented in a renewal document that cites Sections 11-89A-1 et seq. of the Code of Alabama, the enabling authority for regional solid-waste authorities.
