St. Martin Parish approves up to $650,000 for Arnaudville fire station under intergovernmental agreement

The St. Martin Parish Council on Aug. 3 voted to authorize the Parish President to enter an intergovernmental agreement with St. Landry Parish Fire Protection District No. 5 that allows the St. Martin Fire Service District to occupy and use a new fire station in Arnaudville in exchange for consideration not to exceed $650,000.
Ordinance No. 21-08-1330 updates a prior 2020 ordinance and reflects a higher contribution required by the lowest construction bid. The ordinance specifies that St. Landry will construct the facility and remain responsible for construction obligations, property and casualty insurance and utilities. St. Martin’s use rights include locating a minimum of five fire units at the station, 24/7 access, storage for equipment and the placement and use of communications equipment. The agreed term of any intergovernmental accord is not less than 50 years.
Parish President Chester Cedars told the Council that the increased contribution reflects higher construction costs since the 2020 authorization of $450,000. The ordinance was presented and adopted on a motion by Council Member Daniel Richard Jr., seconded by Dean LeBlanc, and the vote was unanimous among members present.
The ordinance states that the acquisition is for the sole purpose of enabling the St. Martin Parish Fire Service District, acting through the Arnaudville Fire Department, to provide fire and related emergency services. Further details of the intergovernmental agreement will be finalized and executed by the Parish President under the terms authorized by the ordinance.
