County Attorney flags rising autopsy and transport costs, proposes exploring local facility; seeks digital evidence funding

Condon recommended exploring whether a local autopsy facility would become cost‑effective for Lancaster County, saying it could reduce transportation costs and relieve capacity pressures in Omaha while serving other jurisdictions and improving training access for law enforcement. Dennis Meyer, the county budget and fiscal officer, told commissioners that revenue changes include an increase tied to a federal juvenile justice grant and that expected contract costs for new technology would be built into the operating budget once contract terms are selected.
Condon also described proposed position reclassifications (moving several Attorney I positions to Attorney II) and creating a supervising attorney for the Child Support unit, noting roughly 66% of that supervising role would be federally funded. He said trial expenses and medical service costs continue to rise with fluctuating trial volumes and increasing evidence demands.
On technology, Condon reviewed a technology fund request for desktops, laptops and related equipment to manage growing digital evidence. He outlined an Axon integration project intended to receive complete evidence packages directly from the police department, reduce manual downloading and uploading, support transcription workflows, and delay the need to hire additional evidence‑handling staff. Meyer said the county would include contract costs in the operating budget once contract length and terms are chosen.
The board did not vote on policy changes or on committing to a facility; Condon framed the autopsy facility as a topic for further study and cross‑jurisdictional planning. The meeting record shows no formal directive beyond discussion and the budget requests under consideration.
