Morgan County recognizes Hartselle students’ severe‑weather app; EMA to host tool

The Morgan County Commission on Feb. 24 recognized Hartselle High School students who developed an app to help residents prepare for severe weather and said the county Emergency Management Agency will host the tool on its website.
Jonathan Warner, Morgan County EMA director, introduced four students and said the app — produced in partnership with Hartselle High School and the Alabama Cyber School — links to National Weather Service radar, provides guidance on building an emergency kit and lists local shelters and safe places. “This would be a useful tool for the residents of Morgan County for years to come,” Warner said, and he noted the students submitted an application to the Presidential AI Challenge.
Warner announced the EMA website would publish the application this week as March begins Alabama’s severe‑weather season. Educators from Hartselle who assisted the students were also recognized at the meeting.
Separately, the commission authorized the chairman to accept a donated weather camera from Alabama Weather Camera Network LLC and WxLogic LLC and assigned responsibility for the camera’s internet connection, power and ongoing maintenance to Morgan County EMA. The donation and the website posting are intended to expand local weather visibility and preparedness, the EMA said.
The recognition and the camera donation were presented as part of the meeting’s public‑safety and community engagement items; both were adopted without objection.
The commission’s next regular meeting is scheduled for March 10 at the Decatur Morgan Tourism office, 350 Market Street NE, Decatur.
