The Northeast Independent School District board of trustees voted unanimously to name Anthony Jarrett the lone finalist in its superintendent search, the board president announced during Wednesday's meeting.
The president moved to designate Jarrett as the lone finalist, a motion that was seconded and approved 6-0 by trustees Thompson, Beyer, Garcia, Cox, Woolzen and Shelton. The board noted that state law requires a 21-day period after a lone-finalist designation before the board may take final employment action.
"I'm on the spot unexpectedly, but thank you very much," Jarrett said after the vote, adding that he approaches the role with a "mindset of service first and self second" and expressed gratitude for the trustees' confidence.
Trustees described Jarrett's interim tenure as a period of visible commitment to student success, academic excellence and community partnerships. The president told the board Jarrett has effectively been interviewing for the position while serving as interim superintendent since January.
Under the district's publicly noticed timeline, the lone-finalist period must elapse before the board may consider formal employment action; the board did not take a final employment vote at the meeting. The president said administration would return with next steps after the waiting period.
No other personnel actions were reported from the earlier executive session, the president said.
