UN: Ebola response bolstered in eastern DRC; multiple disease outbreaks strain Sudan response

The United Nations reported an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo centered in Ituri province, naming affected towns including Rompara, Mungualu and Bunia. The spokesperson said MONUSCO supported the response with two cargo flights that transported medical supplies and equipment from Nairobi and Kinshasa into Bunia, air movement of over 4,600 kilograms of WHO supplies from Nairobi, provision of vehicles and the positioning of a helicopter, and that ambulances and armored vehicles were en route to support evacuations and outreach.
Steph said partners were concerned about spread to North Kivu, with cases confirmed in Goma, Butembo and Katwa and a reported case in Bukavu linked to cross-border travel; response measures include strengthened surveillance, screening at points of entry and adapted operations including remote coordination where needed.
Turning to Sudan, he said the humanitarian community is rushing to contain multiple disease outbreaks despite insecurity and limited access: in West Kordofan state, authorities reported a suspected outbreak of acute watery diarrhea with preliminary figures indicating more than 100 suspected cases and dozens of associated deaths this week; in Darfur partners were responding to suspected mpox cases and WHO supported a large-scale cholera and measles vaccination campaign; dengue has grown in Northern and River Nile states with suspected cases tripling over the past month.
The spokesperson said that despite challenges, the humanitarian community provided assistance to more than 1,600,000 people across Sudan during the first four months of the year and urged all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
