UN reports heavy fighting, displacement in Lebanon; flash appeal about half funded

During the briefing, the United Nations spokesperson reported that UNIFIL peacekeepers observed "significant air and ground activities" and multiple Israeli air strikes in south Lebanon, describing dense armored movements, engineering works and sustained logistical traffic. He said UNIFIL reported 276 firing incidents attributed to the Israeli Defense Forces and 65 attributed to Hezbollah, and noted impacts as close as 550 and 600 meters from a UNIFIL position.
The spokesperson said the UN sent a stop-fire request to the IDF and continued to urge all parties to respect the cessation of hostilities and comply with obligations under international humanitarian law. He summarized humanitarian reporting that since March 2 more than 3,000 people have reportedly been killed in Lebanon and more than 1,000,000 remain displaced, with renewal of displacement orders in Nabatae District and displacement orders having been issued for more than 400 villages and localities.
On financing, Steph said humanitarian partners scaled up emergency cash assistance and that, as of mid-May, 618,000 people have received emergency multipurpose cash assistance through government-led and humanitarian channels; he added that the $308,000,000 flash appeal for Lebanon is 54% funded, leaving "major gaps in assistance, protection and basic services."
