Octavian Spanner, senior adviser to the mayor on policy and external affairs, read the mayor's FY2027 budget statement to the council on May 19. The memo described a budget grounded in fiscal stability and long-term planning, highlighted investments in new schools and a police headquarters, and emphasized a strategy to grow the tax base through development while protecting essential services.
Spanner said the administration has emphasized maintaining creditworthiness and that independent rating agencies continue to recognize the city's financial management. He asked the council to review the proposal in a spirit of constructive collaboration and noted the administration would share additional documentation, including a review of city hiring practices and staffing levels across prior administrations.
Councillor Stephanie Infante, chair of the Budget & Finance Committee, presented the official FY27 budget hearing schedule: formal hearings are scheduled June 1, June 3, June 4, June 8 and June 11, with department-by-department assignments provided to councilors. CAFO Ramona Savaggio will be available to provide pre-hearing technical support through May 26.
Why it matters: the mayor's message and hearing schedule start the 45-day statutory review period after the FY27 submission and set the process for public input and council deliberation ahead of the statutory deadline.
