Ascension Parish board reviews $359 million 2026–27 budget and authorizes superintendent to sign state funding documents

The Ascension Parish School Board on May 20 heard a detailed presentation of the proposed 2026–27 budgets and approved a resolution authorizing the superintendent to sign documents with the Louisiana Department of the Treasury to accept state-held funds.
Board members were presented with the proposed general fund budget showing projected revenues of about $359,380,000 and total expenditures of about $354,972,977 for 2026–27, representing an increase in both revenue and spending from the prior year. The presenter said the revenue increase reflected higher local receipts and listed major expenditure increases including $1.5 million for staff pay increases, $1.35 million for instructional needs, $1.7 million for maintenance, $1.0 million for transportation, $2.3 million for IT software and $3.0 million for retiree insurance. The presenter also described transfers, charter school transfers and contingency planning if funding streams change.
The board was told the 2024 bond proceeds—approximately $44,000,000 remaining—are anticipated to be available in February 2027, and that some construction projects are already underway. The presenter said the district is monitoring teacher retirement contribution rates and noted projected transfers and fund balances across the health care, debt service, special revenue and construction funds.
Separately, the board considered a resolution authorizing the superintendent to sign all documents with the Louisiana Department of the Treasury related to funding for a school entry program. Dr. Walker explained that Representative Penn Brass secured $50,000 for five school districts to implement a program supporting young men, and that the funds (earmarked for Donaldsonville/Loriville in Ascension Parish) are at the state treasury and require a local resolution to release them.
A motion to adopt the resolution was made, seconded and approved in a roll-call vote. The board also approved the consent agenda (see separate report) and scheduled committee meetings to continue work on the budget and other items.
The district presenter's figures were described as based on current information and subject to revision if funding streams change; the board was told staff will return with proposed changes if new information arises. The board will take further budget actions in coming meetings as needed.
