Chicago Board of Education votes to enter closed session under Open Meetings Act

President Sean B. Hardin called the Chicago Board of Education special meeting to order on May 19, 2026, at the district’s Loop office and noted that board members and senior leadership were physically present in the boardroom.
“A special board meeting of Tuesday, 05/19/2026 is hereby called to order,” Hardin said, and the board secretary confirmed 13 members were present, establishing a quorum.
A committee member moved "for the passage of motion number 26-0519-MO1 and the commencement of a closed session to consider matters permitted under section 2 c of the Open Meetings Act, subsection 1 and 16 as specified in the motion," and the board secretary seconded the motion. The board conducted a roll-call vote; members answered "Aye" or "Yes" and the secretary announced the result: 12 ayes, 0 nays. The motion was adopted.
After reconvening from the closed session, the board secretary reported that board member Rio Sierra had joined the meeting at 1:00 p.m. and that there were no items requiring votes from the executive session. President Hardin then moved to adjourn; the motion was seconded and the board voted to adjourn.
The meeting opened with logistical announcements, including that the next board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. in the Garden Level Boardroom at 42 West Madison Street and that registration and speaker-lottery information is available at cpsboe.org. No public speakers were registered for this special meeting.
