Board accepts election results; proposed $165.6 million Rome City School District budget rejected by voters

The board resolved to accept the election results declaring Jeff Dimanus elected to a five-year term beginning July 1, 2026, and Suzanne Carvelli and Rocky Capone elected to three-year terms beginning July 1, 2026. The clerk was directed to give written notice to the successful candidates and notify them of the oath of office requirement.
On the budget proposition, the board recorded that voters did not approve the proposed 2026–27 budget, reported in the meeting as $165,561,086, with 49% voting to approve and 51% rejecting the measure. The board noted the bus-expenditure proposition passed; members approved accepting the proposition results and also accepted the district clerk's affidavit ballot report completed on 05/20/2026.
Procedural notes: motions to accept the election report, budget results and the affidavit ballot report were moved and seconded by board members and carried by voice vote. Several routine consent-agenda items were also approved earlier in the meeting, including overnight trips for Rome Free Academy students and staff, approval of tenure for Patrick Herron effective Sept. 7, 2026, and an affiliation agreement with Capella University.
Next steps: the clerk will notify the successful board candidates and administer the oath; the district will need to address the failed budget proposition through the next steps allowed under state law and district policy (the board did not adopt a replacement budget at this meeting). The board entered executive session following the public meeting and did not return to open session.
