The Ishpeming City Council approved a set of resolutions that will place proposed charter amendments on the ballot and forward required documents to state officials for certification.
City staff explained each resolution included both the existing charter language and the proposed ballot wording (the council must approve the ballot language to send the measures to the clerk's office and to state authorities). The measures adopted at the meeting covered changes including qualifications for elective office, manager residency requirements, and purchasing-procedure language. Councilors voted on individual resolutions by motion and voice vote; each motion carried.
Staff said some measures include an optional statement of purpose that will accompany the ballot wording if helpful, and that city staff must file the certified resolutions with the governor and attorney-general's offices as part of the process. Councilors discussed timing and next steps and directed staff to proceed with certification and public outreach ahead of the ballot process.
The council did not finalize any binding policy changes at the meeting; the adopted resolutions only send language to voters for consideration as charter amendments.
