The Monroe County Board of Commissioners on May 6 adopted a proclamation declaring May 2026 Foster Care Awareness Month and urged community support for children in care.
Chairman John D. Christy presented the proclamation to Diane Rogers (Foster Care Program Manager), Sandra James (Foster Parent Recruiter/Trainer) and Casey Anne Athey (Foster Parent Coordinator). Diane Rogers said there is a continuing need for foster families: "approximately half of the foster families were lost after COVID and they have not regained the families," and she thanked the commissioners on behalf of the county's 121 children in foster care.
The proclamation encourages residents, community leaders and organizations to support foster-family recruitment and services. The meeting record does not specify new county funding or program changes tied to the proclamation; it is a recognition and awareness action.
Next steps: outreach and recruitment efforts by Children & Youth Services and partner organizations.
