The North Kingstown School Committee on May 19 approved a series of procurement and spending items tied to the district’s spend‑down and operations.
On facility and food-service procurement, the committee approved the D1 bid for a walk‑in cooler/freezer at the updated price of $42,003.07 after discussion about a higher-than‑expected figure compared with earlier planning estimates. A committee member noted the line earlier had been presented at about $30,000; administration explained the price reflects updated scope and the current spend‑down plan.
The committee also approved D2 (cafeteria tables) after administration explained which schools and table types were included and excluded from the scope.
A lengthy discussion covered the child nutrition spend‑down plan, which the administration revised after receiving recent bids. Members reviewed totals across fiscal years and the effect of bid updates on the projected spend-down. The administration recommended removing the concession-truck line and reallocating funds toward Wickford Middle School purchases that would be spent when the new building is complete; committee members voted to approve the spend‑down plan with the $332,000 removed and asked that detail for the Wickford items be refined with the Building Advisory Committee before final allocation.
On contract disputes and personnel, the committee voted to deny a bus-contractor appeal and to uphold the superintendent’s recommendation. After returning from executive session, the committee approved pulled personnel items (E1, E3 and E4) and a non‑renewal motion where indicated; the chair disclosed no votes were taken during executive session itself.
Motions were generally passed by voice vote with 'ayes' recorded; members noted some recusal instances where a member stepped aside from a vote.
Next steps noted by the administration included routing Wickford spending details to the Building Advisory Committee and supplying committee members with the detailed spend‑down numbers and any required written authorizations from RIDE (Rhode Island Department of Education) for bond or grant‑related uses.
