County backs String Lake conservation plan, agrees to pursue $500,000 grant and DNR permit

Maggie Gross of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Kay Gross, SWCD District Administrator, told the Cottonwood County Board on May 6 that a proposed structure at String Lake would require a DNR Public Waters permit and that permits must be applied for by an entity rather than an individual landowner.
Kay Gross said the project cost would be approximately $400,000 and that staff planned to apply for a $500,000 Conservation Partners Legacy (CPL) grant through the Outdoor Heritage Fund; the CPL application requires a 10% local match. Gross also said an engineering design will be needed this summer to support the grant application and estimated that design would cost about $30,000.
After discussion, the board recessed as the County Board, convened as the Ditch Authority, and voted unanimously to approve engineering fees and proceed with the CPL grant application process. The board also voted to apply for the CPL grant and to submit a DNR Public Waters permit using the Cottonwood County Drainage Authority as the applying entity.
