Board approves AP Government; administration requests AP Statistics textbook and platform purchase

Trustees approved the AP Government curriculum item and discussed a planned purchase for AP Statistics materials that administration recommends to align the course to updated College Board standards.

Earlier in the meeting, the board voted to approve the AP Government curriculum as presented. Later, Dr. Nemeth invited Martin Lindbergh and Connie Gilbert to describe the recommended AP Statistics resource: The district proposes purchasing The Practice of Statistics for the AP Course (8th edition, BFW) along with teacher and student digital-platform access.

Connie Gilbert said the course’s last textbook purchase was in 2010–11 and described how the College Board’s revised course-and-exam description (CED) has refocused AP Statistics into fewer, more robust units. Gilbert said the recommended resource includes teacher editions, editable slides, professional-development videos, integrated Desmos calculator support, Google Classroom integration, and an AI tutor option on the platform to support student learning.

Martin Lindbergh explained the purchase request is sized for three sections—based on historical enrollment across Lakeland and Milford high schools—and comes from the teaching-and-learning technology budget placeholder. Board members asked whether the purchase was planned and where it was budgeted; Lindbergh and administration said the expense had been reserved in the TLT budget and was not an unplanned expenditure.

Trustees voiced questions about how the resource supports relevance and career connections; presenters noted features that link statistical concepts to careers and practical data work. Administration indicated the purchase will be brought forward for approval per the district’s procurement process.

The board scheduled follow-up review and will act on related procurement items according to normal purchasing timelines.
