Sheriff reports on GIS, 911 funding and grant activity; county staff give safety and facilities updates

Sheriff Tom Seifert updated the Glacier County Board of Commissioners on April 23 about efforts to modernize the county’s GIS mapping and 911 addressing. Seifert said a recent application to the state library for GIS funding, prepared by a contractor, was rejected; he will meet with the grant writer Great West to determine alternatives and said the county has about 18 months to two years to get GIS systems ready for 911 addressing.
Seifert also said other federal and congressional funding efforts are moving forward. He reported that an approximate $420,000 source related to 911 replacement work was moving forward and that a separate congressional allocation identified in the meeting was roughly $330,000; Seifert said he would keep the board informed as those funds develop.
On other county business, staff reported ongoing work on a trail system agreement and a scheduled meeting to review a lease/contract with Logan Health for county buildings. Staff also said the county’s OSHA inspection passed with only minor follow-ups and praised participation in Montana SafetyFest training events.
Commissioners and staff discussed volunteer fire department insurance coverage and options to manage premiums; staff suggested exploring cost-sharing for coverage between the city and county. The board also heard routine updates on mobile home tax handling, property tax assistance programs for low-income and elderly residents, and other administrative items.
No formal votes were required on the grant planning items at the meeting; the sheriff and staff will report back with grant-writer recommendations and contract or funding specifics as they become available.
