Commissioners raise engineering, drainage and warranty concerns before accepting county maintenance of trail

Glacier County commissioners spent a substantive portion of the May 7 meeting discussing whether to accept transfer of a recently constructed trail to county maintenance. County roads and maintenance staff, commissioners and a state/trails representative described areas where the pavement is cracking, drainage features may be inadequate, and contractor obligations may remain unresolved.

County road and maintenance leaders said they were willing to take over the trail but only after the state and contractor clarify responsibility for observed failures, provide a remediation plan, and confirm compliance with stormwater permit transfer requirements (the county noted a certified SWIP/stormwater administrator is required for permit transfer). Staff asked the state representative for a site walk-through and requested photographs and inspection documentation be shared so the county can assess potential ongoing maintenance and liability costs.

The commissioners emphasized they did not want to accept an asset that was already failing and said they would seek contractor remediation or state confirmation before finalizing any turnover. County roads staff offered to schedule a walk-through and said they would follow up with the state to get a plan and timeline for repairs or acceptance criteria.

No formal action to accept the trail was recorded; the matter remains under review pending a site inspection, state/contractor clarification and potential remediation.
