Glacier County commissioners on May 7 approved advertising and beginning the hiring process for an MSU Extension agent position following Carrie Lewis's retirement/resignation and invited commissioners to participate on the interview committee. County and Extension staff also clarified the county's contribution formula for agent salaries.
Tracy from MSU Extension explained that, historically, a formula was developed by the Montana Association of Counties to balance county contributions for Extension agent positions. The method ties the county contribution either to 65% of the county clerk-and-recorder salary or to a capped amount; this year MSU Extension proposed increasing the cap by $2,000, which Tracy said sets Glacier County's cap at $41,000. Tracy said the change is a flat-dollar increase (the Extension described it as a $2,000 cap increase for this year) rather than a 2% automatic raise for agents.
A commissioner asked how mandated state raises interact with county contributions. Tracy said state-mandated raises apply to Extension (state) employees but the county's contribution is handled separately and does not double up on state COLA for Extension faculty.
Commissioners asked for the Extension to send the underlying calculation and dollar detail for use during the county budgeting process; Tracy agreed to email the breakdown. The commissioners also discussed having county representation on the interview committee and requested a line in the job description to emphasize collaboration with the Blackfeet community; Tracy offered to modify the job posting before it is advertised.
The motion to authorize advertising the position and to invite commissioners to participate in interviews passed by voice vote.
Implementation: MSU Extension will post the vacancy and HR will coordinate interview logistics with commissioners and identified community members to serve on the hiring panel.
