Penn State Extension details summer 4‑H camps, local day programs and livestock sale

Penn State Extension gave the Monroe County commissioners an update on outreach and youth programs, highlighting expanded 4‑H activity this summer.
"We have 14 youth from Monroe County going to residential camp, which is the most we've ever had," Erin Greenleaf, the county 4‑H educator, told the board. The residential camp runs the last week of June near State College and will include about 100 campers overall. Greenleaf said the county will also offer local day camps open to both 4‑H members and nonmembers for children ages 8 to 18, with programs such as kitchen chemistry, STEM, animal science and expressive arts.
Greenleaf outlined additional youth-focused events: strong participation at the West End Fair, the fourth annual livestock sale on Aug. 29 at 12 p.m. in the fair's livestock tent (funds raised support 4‑H programming), an active sewing club preparing for a regional fashion review in July, and a local stream study led by a state project ambassador working with county youth. She said the extension is collaborating with the county Office of Emergency Management and first responders to start a youth emergency preparedness club aimed at encouraging careers in volunteer firefighting, EMS and related fields.
Jennifer, the Extension client relationship manager, reviewed broader Extension offerings and outreach: master gardener programs, a "seed to supper" series concluding at Hughes Library, in‑home food preservation webinars through May and June, and a master gardener plant sale at the Extension office (724 Phillips Street in Stroudsburg) on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. "You have any questions, you can find me after or visit extension.psu.edu," Jennifer said.
Commissioners and Extension staff discussed parade participation and local resources for environmental projects. A commissioner suggested 4‑H members carry signage listing activities during the PA 250 parade; Greenleaf said some horse members will participate. County staff pointed the Extension toward planning department and conservation district resources for stream studies.
