Applicant outlines security measures for home‑based gunsmithing business; commission to consider conditions

The Grantsville City Planning Commission heard a staff presentation May 19 on a conditional use permit application for "Tinman's Gun Works," a home‑based gunsmithing business proposed at 332 West Apple Street in the RM‑7 zone.

Shelby, the planning staffer, explained the parcel lacks the updated 100‑foot frontage requirement and, because the city received a public comment, state/code procedure required the application to come before the commission. No members of the public spoke during the hearing.

Andrew Christiansen (self‑identified in the hearing) described security and operational safeguards: an ATF‑approved gun safe inside a secured room, a locked interior door, SimpliSafe alarm sensors for motion and glass break, window opening sensors and motion‑activated cameras. He said no ammunition would be stored at the site and that any necessary test‑firing would occur outside city limits.

Commissioners asked whether the applicant planned gunsmithing activity beyond basic repairs; Christiansen said the work would qualify as gunsmithing and he does not have an FFL to sell ammunition or conduct transfers on the premises. Staff noted the item is similar to a previously approved application and that conditions can be imposed and reexamined if complaints arise.
