Select Board appoints two student police officers, elects new chair

The Town of Southborough Select Board on Monday appointed two student police officers and completed its annual reorganization of leadership.
A presenter asked the board to appoint Connor Emburg and Matthew Hebert as student officers with the Southborough Police Department, saying both candidates had completed background checks, psychological evaluations and physical exams and had been accepted to the Marlborough Police Academy starting June 1. “Based upon the successful completion of our hiring process… I respectfully request the select board appoint Connor Emburg and Matthew Hebert to the position of student officers with the effective date of 06/01/2026,” the presenter said.
The board moved to appoint the candidates; after the motion, the town clerk administered the oath of office. The oath included a pledge to "faithfully and impartially discharge the duties incumbent upon you as a student police officer for the Town of Southborough… and to uphold the Constitution of the United States, the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the bylaws of the Town of Southborough, and the rules and regulations of the Southborough Police Department." The two new student officers were congratulated by board members.
Separately, the board conducted its annual reorganization. A motion nominated Cook as chair and Faz as vice chair; the motion was seconded and members responded affirmatively during the vote. Board members thanked the outgoing chair for service and welcomed the newly elected leadership.
What’s next: The two student officers will begin academy training on June 1 and proceed to field training thereafter; the board’s new leadership will preside over upcoming agenda items and follow-ups.
