Nance County discusses road repairs, FEMA projects and traffic study options; traffic counter purchase fails

The Nance County Board of Supervisors discussed multiple road and right-of-way issues May 12, including ongoing FEMA-funded repairs, local resurfacing requests, a proposed traffic counter and changes to the county’s utility right-of-way permit.
Highway Superintendent Tony Bernt told the board that FEMA work on Valley Road is ongoing, fairground drainage work is nearing completion and crews are hauling gravel to bare spots around the county. The board discussed courthouse driveway potholes and options for a used motor grader; supervisors expressed a preference to continue at least another year of payments on current equipment.
Resident Joe Swantek reported yard disturbance following placement of a new bridge on West County Road and asked that the disturbed area be meshed and reseeded; he also asked the county to consider resurfacing about a quarter-mile of road from his home to the town blacktop. The road department said it will explore reseeding and pricing options.
On intersection safety at N 140th and N 530th, supervisors discussed traffic-counting options (approximately $3,800 to buy) and the need for a traffic study; a motion by Scott Russell to purchase a traffic counter received no second and failed. The board asked the road department to check rentals with neighboring counties and voted to add flashing lights to stop-ahead signs in both directions.
Separately, the board approved an addition to the Utility Right-of-Way permit that reserves Nance County’s right to request removal or relocation of utilities or construction if road repairs require it. Darren Nelson moved and Steve Crouse seconded approval of the addition.
