The Clawson City Council on May 19 voted to recommend that the Michigan Liquor Control Commission approve a development Class C liquor license for Core 34 Pilates, a mat- and reformer-based studio proposing a front-cafe with limited alcoholic service.
Applicants Lavonda (speaker 13) and her partner Tasia (speaker 8, introduced at the meeting) described a split layout: a back entrance and studio area dedicated to Pilates classes and a front cafe open to the public that will offer coffee, matcha, light snacks and limited alcoholic drinks for brunch and select events (examples offered included mimosas and espresso martinis). Lavonda said the studio currently operates a successful location in West Bloomfield and expects the downtown offering to attract walk-in cafe customers as well as class participants.
Council members asked about food service, hours and how the alcohol component fits the wellness-oriented concept. Planning staff (speaker 11) said the MLCC will set final operating hours and that the local resolution does not change the city's overall downtown liquor-license balance; staff noted a prior downtown approval did not increase the net license count. After questions and positive remarks from several council members, the body voted to forward a favorable resolution to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.
