Council honors retiring parks superintendent, marks National Library Week and accepts $30,000 Friends gift

The Woodstock City Council used its floor-discussion time on April 21 to recognize long-serving city employees and local institutions.
Mayor read a proclamation honoring John (Johnny) Mecklenburg, who began with the city in 1988 and rose to serve as parks and streets superintendent. The proclamation thanked Mecklenburg for 36 years of service; Mecklenburg accepted the recognition and described starting as summer help and later joining the city full time.
The council also read a proclamation in observance of National Library Week and commended the Woodstock Public Library for services ranging from digital downloads to local outreach. Library representative Nick thanked the council and staff, highlighted a rise in digital circulation (noting digital checkouts have increased and at times surpassed physical materials), and said the library had expanded youth services and upgraded technology.
The Friends of the Library presented a $30,000 check to support library programs. Nick invited the public to the Prairie Roots outdoor space kickoff on Saturday, May 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and thanked the council for regular city support.
The council took photos with staff, the retiree and library representatives and expressed appreciation for the public-service careers and community programming that both the parks/street superintendent and library provide.
