City hires search firm for police chief; OPA to present canine-policy benchmarking in June
Summary
The city selected Public Sector Search and Consulting to run the permanent police chief search and expects hiring activity the week of June 17; the Office of Public Accountability (OPA) said a draft benchmarking report on GRPD's canine policy will be returned in June and focuses on written policy rather than individual incidents.

City officials told the Public Safety Committee they have selected the search firm Public Sector Search and Consulting to lead the recruitment for a permanent police chief and that the hiring and selection process is expected the week of June 17.
"Based on that feedback, we've selected Public Sector Search and Consulting, the same firm that helped in the last two searches," the city manager said. The firm is recruiting nationally and internally; Chief Joe Trigg told the committee he intends to be a candidate.
The city manager said the public will likely have opportunities to meet finalists, similar to prior searches, and that panels and public forums are expected when candidates are on site.
Separately, Mr. Davis from the Office of Public Accountability said OPA is preparing a benchmarking analysis of the GRPD canine policy that compares the department’s written policy to peer cities and recommendations from nationally recognized professional organizations. "The draft report does include a review of GRPD's policies as well as nationally recognized professional organizations and the canine policies of peer cities," Mr. Davis said, and staff anticipates bringing the report back to the committee in June.
Committee members asked whether the review also covers foot-pursuit policy. OPA clarified the current work is focused on canine policy and canine pursuits specifically; foot-pursuit policy is a related topic that may be reviewed separately.
No appointment was made at the meeting. The search firm selection and the OPA report are preparatory steps; the committee will receive further briefings and a public process for finalists is expected during the selection week.
