Carbondale tree board maps summer outreach: mulching drives, demo plots, champion-tree ideas

The Carbondale Tree Board used its May 21 meeting to map summer outreach and volunteer projects, from a planned fall mulching effort to tree walks, pruning workshops and a potential —champion tree' program centered on public-rights-of-way.

Vanessa said she will "reach out to Carl to start doing some preliminary planning" for volunteer mulching in the fall, including a list of trees/areas to mulch, estimates of mulch quantities and advertising plans. Carl suggested working with local partners and adding events to the town calendar.

Members debated mulch materials and practices. One member noted a recent article suggesting reduced use of bark mulch and said researchers are reevaluating bark products; Vanessa replied that "I am still a proponent of wood mulch" and favored arborist chips where available because they break down and support soil microorganisms. Others raised concerns that some mulches wash out during heavy storms and suggested testing multiple materials.

Several members proposed practical demonstrations. Carl and others suggested using a spot behind the recreation center as a demonstration garden where different mulches and planting practices could be tested and documented with signage for public education. The board also agreed that the recent public fruit-tree pruning workshops were successful and that similar hands-on events should repeat next spring.

Noah proposed a local —champion tree' program to highlight notable trees in town and to teach residents how to measure and appraise large specimens. Members cautioned about privacy and safety when listing trees on private property and suggested focusing initial efforts on trees in public parks and rights-of-way; Dan proposed researching right-of-way ownership and jurisdictional control (including HOAs and external entities such as Rafta) as a possible board project to clarify where the board can take action.

Members also flagged small operational items: Dan reported that the board's pop-up tent used at events is damaged and suggested budgeting for a replacement with "Carbondale Tree Board" printed on it; Carl offered to investigate local printing vendors.

The board closed the discussion by asking volunteers to bring specific proposals and logistics (dates, required mulch tonnage, insurance/permits if needed) to upcoming meetings so projects can be scheduled and publicized.
