The Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee reviewed a packed summer events calendar at its May 18 meeting, including a two-weekend carnival, a May 29 end-of-school "Big Wave" children'water event, a June 13 color walk and a July 4 celebration with music and fireworks.
Kathy, the staff member leading events, outlined the carnival schedule and ticketing rules: "Armbands are $25, and they are good..." and she explained time-limited armband sessions for Saturday and Sunday and evening sessions each day. She also detailed the carnival's daily hours (Thursday—Friday 18:00—22:00; Saturday—Sunday 13:00—22:00) and encouraged committee members to share the event post that explained the rules clearly.
Kathy said the May 29 "Big Wave" — a last-day-of-school event partnered with the fire department — will run noon to 13:30 at Pavilion B/back parking lot and will include hose-spray play and free popsicles for children. She said last year's turnout was strong and staff hope to match it this year.
On June 13 staff will hold a color walk and flag-raising tied to the county's America 250 commemoration. The event starts at 09:00 at the new Public Works Building; participants can pick up county "passports" (a Chamber of Commerce program) and receive a passport stamp for attending. Kathy said registrations are open now, t-shirt orders must be placed by the Monday before the event and preregistered participants are guaranteed shirts; in-person registrants will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.
The committee also previewed July 4 activities: gates at 17:00, music at 18:00, family-friendly vendors and fireworks around 20:45. Kathy asked for volunteer shifts for a giveaway tent for children entering the field area.
Why it matters: these events are the department's main summer attractions, rely on volunteer support and on coordinated staff planning (permits, volunteer staffing, vendor coordination). The committee emphasized outreach (social media posts and banners along Murfreesboro Road) and confirmed registration and t-shirt deadlines to ensure planning timelines are met.
