District reports net decline at Somerset High School, outlines recruitment steps

The Somerset School Board reviewed enrollment figures showing modest gains at lower grades but a year-to-date decline at the high school.
"In each section...the red box in the lower right hand corner of elementary, middle, and high school shows the sum the total difference from the beginning of the year to now," Dr. Grama said. He reported the district is up by one student in elementary and up by two in middle school, but down 10 at the high school.
Dr. Grama provided a breakdown of students who left the high school this year: seven enrolled in virtual programs elsewhere, three moved out of the district, two went to homeschooling, one was an exchange student and two were early graduates previously approved by the board. He said virtual-program departures were the largest single driver of the decline.
Board members asked about grade levels and academic profiles; Dr. Grama said most departures were juniors and seniors and that academic capabilities varied. He also said tentative data show the district is trending toward net positive open enrollment for next year but cautioned that those figures are subject to change.
To respond, the district will include open-enrollment outreach in a pre-referendum survey, contact families who express interest directly, update district website materials to highlight district strengths and use leadership cohorts to gather student feedback, Dr. Grama said.
