Glenmont resident asks board to seek school-zone designation and lower speeds on McGee Drive after fatal crash

During public comment, resident Amelia Barbadoro described a recent fatal collision involving a motorcycle and asked the board for support in pursuing traffic-safety changes on McGee Drive near Glenmont Elementary.

Barbadoro said her husband's SUV was stopped in the center turn lane when the collision occurred and described the middle lane as a frequent site of high-speed traffic and near-miss crashes for drivers and students. She asked the board to consider supporting three specific changes: designation of the area in front of Glenmont Elementary as a school zone, a reduced speed limit and repainting lane markings so they no longer suggest a continuous left-turn lane where left turns are not possible.

Barbadoro said she has contacted the Department of Transportation and would appreciate the board’s support in elevating the request to the agenda or otherwise communicating with relevant agencies. Board members thanked her for speaking and acknowledged the safety concerns; no formal board action was taken at the meeting and the matter was not scheduled as an agenda item at that time.

The board said it would consider how best to respond to the request, including whether to place the matter on a future agenda or coordinate with district staff and local transportation authorities.
