Ellington music department recognized among 'Best Communities for Music Education'; teachers describe AP and UConn credit courses

The board opened its meeting by recognizing the music department after Ellington received a 2026 Best Communities for Music Education designation. The chair thanked teachers and students for consistent achievement: "I know that it may feel to some people like it's no big deal, because we've gotten it 8 years in a row, but I know you guys both work super hard," the chair said.
Two music teachers described the district’s offerings. One explained the AP Music Theory class as a year‑long, college‑level sequence that includes composition and analysis; another described a one‑semester UConn ECE music appreciation course that grants students UConn credit. The teachers said the district offers evening courses to accommodate students who cannot fit music into daytime schedules and highlighted student input into course additions and a thriving ensemble program across the high school, middle and elementary schools.
Board members and the student representative praised the program and encouraged continued community support. The board will present a 'Friends of Ellington' award at a future meeting and said music concerts and ensemble events remain on the spring calendar.
