Committee restores mowing duties to county maintenance after debate over grievance

Wesley, the county's maintenance lead, briefed the committee on multiple facilities items including replacement of a leaking health-department window, pending quotes for elevator phone replacements because AT&T is phasing out landlines, and approval of a $2,800 contract to remove and grind three dead trees near county buildings.
Wesley also reported a completed load assessment for chiller placement, progress on repainting at the downtown courthouse and plans to study water intrusion into conduit under the jail basement concrete. He said penetrations for new equipment will be sealed to prevent future leaks.
A long-running dispute over mowing duties resurfaced. Maintenance staff said mowing had been removed from their responsibilities years ago and that a grievance had been filed in the past when duties were reassigned. Committee members debated whether the grievance was still unresolved and whether returning mowing to maintenance would render the grievance moot.
Chair called for a motion to allow the maintenance department to take over mowing; Tom moved, Mike seconded. The motion passed with two recorded no votes (Dave and Joe). Committee members said if issues arise under the new arrangement they should be brought back to the committee.
Wesley will continue to finalize quotes for elevator-phone replacement, obtain bids where required and follow up on the jail basement study and other maintenance work.
