Police Chief Mr. Esty asked the Hibbing City Council on May 20 to approve the purchase of five Axon 10 tasers to replace the department's older units. Chief Esty said the department previously used model 7s and obtained the new model 10s at comparable price this year. He described the model as having an effective range of roughly 35 to 50 feet and said they are an annual budget item for small tools.
Council approved the $24,999 purchase by voice vote. No council member requested additional information or delayed the purchase; the chief said the department will proceed with procurement under the budgeted line item.
