Board hears construction update and waterline delay that could affect Midland Trail Elementary timeline

District facilities staff and the project team updated the Fayette County Board of Education on construction work tied to the new Midland Trail Elementary and related athletic fields, saying most work is now inside and that substantial completion is scheduled for June 12 with final completion on July 12.
Mr. Payton, who delivered the construction report, said the building is fully roofed and many systems are in place. He told the board that contractors reported confidence in the schedule but that a remaining issue is installation of several hundred feet of waterline that also serves a new wastewater treatment plant and the softball field; the water line has not been fully installed and the water utility prefers to wait until final grading is complete.
"Most of that water line will be the easiest water line they've ever put in their life... but some of it is going to be some of the hardest they've ever put in," Payton said, noting that stretches through rock could slow the schedule. He said the project supervisor expected tank-setting with a crane to begin the week of June 20 and that commissioning should follow completion of the water work.
Payton also reviewed field work: baseball and softball fields are in use, lights and scoreboards are operational, and the baseball field has water while the softball field does not. He said fencing and a punch-list of minor items remain and that subcontractors and the contractor are addressing those details.
Board members asked practical questions about staging furniture, paving and elevator delivery; Payton said furniture delivery is scheduled for July 6 to follow paving so boxes would not be dragged across new floors. He said the elevator installation remains scheduled for July and that some interior fixture orders (commodes, sinks) were still being finalized.
District staff described mitigation steps and told the board they would report back if the water-line timeline threatens occupancy dates. No formal change order or schedule amendment was approved at the meeting.
